Frank’s story: how an Air Max 1 hobby got out of hand

Outsole didn’t start as a business, but as an obsession with the Nike Air Max 1. On my twelfth birthday I bought my first Nike Air Max 1 with my own money. There was no hype, no resale market and nobody had multiple pairs in the closet. Most kids wore Puma, Lacoste or K-Swiss. Air Max wasn’t exactly the “logical” choice, but for me it was instant. That feeling never left.

What began with two pairs a year became two a month and eventually a lot more than that. To make that possible I started buying and selling sneakers. Trading, collecting, checking, comparing. That’s where my knowledge came from. Not from the internet, but from having thousands of pairs in my hands.

Together with Bas Honders and Dennis Wegereef I built Outsole. The three of us created something out of a passion for the Nike Air Max 1 and a love for sneakers in general. I’m forever grateful to them, along with all our other friends, for building this together from nothing.

Outsole is still what it was in the beginning: by sneakerheads, for sneakerheads. The shop, the office, the collection… it all breathes that culture. And beyond the three of us, many people have helped build what Outsole is today. All the love to everyone who has been part of #TeamOutsole.
